Mexico - La Cava del Tequila

La Cava del Tequila is located inside the Mexican temple next to the restaurant. Limited seating available with standing room at the bar and a few high-top tables. You're welcome to enjoy your beverages at the bar, at one of a few tables or get a margarita to go. (Sorry, no shots to go.)

This place is heaven. Take it easy while you're here or you won’t make it around the rest of the world! Even their tequila bar is educational - you can get schooled on the history of tequila, the different types, or why there's a worm . . . or more accurately, why there's no worm in these. Who says learning isn't fun? But enough about learning, bring on the shots! They have over 70 varieties of authentic tequila. From dark to light and sweet to dry you'll be sure to find something to suit your tequila needs at this bar.  The bartenders, aka ‘tequila ambassadors’, are very friendly & knowledgeable on tequila and can help you pick out one that’s perfect for you. The sampler is the best deal - you get to try 3 tequilas for a reasonable price and a sidecar of sangrita - a liquidy-salsa-like chaser that makes a perfect spicy, citrusy, finish.

Be sure to check out our Epcot Drink Recipes section where you can learn how to make these excellent Margaritas and the Sangrita Chaser at home.

Margarita Flight - You may have heard of a margarita flight or sampler here, but it has been taken off the menu. Our bartender said it is simply too involved to make when the bar is busy. They might make it if you are there when it's not busy. (And we're not sure when that would be!)

Pour Quality
Above Average – Obviously you know what you’re getting with a tequila shot. For a good value, I recommend the lower priced sampler. You get to try a nice variety and it’s a fun experience. While the margaritas here are more expensive than the ones outside at the kiosk, they are fresh, unique and, ahem, nicely poured. They are at the top of my scale for what I’ll pay for a single drink, but for one, it’s worth it. Live a little, you're on vacation!
And did I mention you're getting your money's worth on the tequila in these things?? Tip: getting your margarita in a plastic to-go cup will get you roughly 3oz. more than the standard glass one.

Words don’t do this place justice. If there was a beautiful pool by their front door I'd think I was back in Puerto Vallarta. Beautiful, warm-tones with an upscale, trendy but rustic decor. The comfort level is based on how crowded the bar is. It can be a comfy hang-out for good conversation one day, or crowded body to body during the busy times of the year. If it’s crowded, just grab one to go so you don’t miss out.

These margaritas put the ones outside - that are actually decent for a slushie machine - to shame. Hand mixed unique ingredients make these something that's really special. Feel like something a little, ok, a lot out of the ordinary?

Try a Jalapeno Margarita that's made with fresh jalapeno peppers. It's not as spicy as you might expect and the lingering heat on your tongue being delivered via an ice cold drink is an experience you won't forget. The fresh jalapeno is seeded to keep the heat level down so it's not just heat that it lends to the drink but a unique green pepper flavor that feels remarkably at home in a margarita. Does that sound like a little much? How about a Cucumber Margarita? Fresh, cool & clean tasting without the jalapeno "pop" that's in the previous, another solid cocktail.

The Blood Orange Margarita sports an intense flavor, and not in a good way. Very sweet, syrupy and tangy. The frothy foam topping doesn't add anything to the drink flavor-wise, it just gets in the way of taking a sip. Not the worst we've had, but there are better options here.

For something different, try the Tequila Liqueur Sampler. It consists of half-shots of
Agavero, 1921 Cream and Patron Cafe. Basically, a tequila, a dark, heavy coffee-flavored tequila and a creamy, Bailey's-like tequila. Three unique tastes for just $10. A great deal for some unique liqueurs.

The Hibiscus Margarita is significantly less flowery than expected! It has a rather prounounced sweet flavor, but not overpowering, that is smooth to drink. A perfect balance of sweet and sour. The hibiscus syrup adds that unique flavor that is hard to put your finger on, but adds depth to a typical margarita.

This may take 2nd place for best specialty margarita - the featured Mezcal Frozen Margarita. A lightly sweet flavor with a very subtle hint of tart blackberry flavor that leaves a surprisingly spicy aftertaste thanks to the chipotle syrup. It's what I'd imagine eating a fresh spring flower would taste like, with a light spicy kick. An interesting collection of ingredients that don't look like they'd go together, but blend beautifully.
All this delectable enjoyment for only $8 while the blended margaritas outside at the stand cost over $9! Once this "featured" drink is no longer on the menu, you can still ask the bartenders for it, and as long as they have the ingredients there's no reason they can't still make it.

Looking for another crisp, cool and refreshing margarita? Order up the Avocado Margarita for a unique treat. The fresh, creamy flavor of the avocado blends perfectly with lime juice and melon liqueur. It's easy to see, err taste, why this is one of the fan favorites here. If some of the other flavors here look like a bit much to your tastebuds, this is one of the more tame varieties.

Now here's how to kick start your day - Coffee Margarita. Yes, this is every bit as delicious as it sounds. This tall pour has the consistency of a chocolate milkshake, but the flavor of an iced latte with a moderately strong coffee flavored kick and a lingering aftertaste of tequila, just enough to make you know what you're drinking.

So, you've been thinking a worm at the bottom of your tequila (or more appropriately mezcal) is just so...been there; done that? Yeah, how 'bout a Scorpion! Just like the larva in other mezcals, bottles of Scorpion Mezcal contain just one scorpion. Consider yourself lucky if the bottom of the bottle chooses you. Need a dumb fact to go with your super cool scorpion? Larva used to be added to mezcal to boast the proof of the liquor. High proof alcohol has preservative properties. Too low a proof and the larva would decompose at the bottom of the bottle. Nowadays we've got slightly more effective techniques to test for proof so the scorpion's in there just to show the guy next to you that you're tough, or stupid. Enjoy that little arachnid, errrrr, crustacean, ummm, land crab with all the flare you deserve, he's totally harmless to eat.

Wimps are probably wondering what these venomous critters taste like. Real men, stop reading here, I don't want to ruin your experience. The answer; crunchy tequila. They've got no flavor whatsoever of their own. If you've ever eaten a shrimp with the shell on (it's actually not unusual to eat shell-on shrimp in Asia) it's a very similar experience but instead of shrimp flavor you'll just get liquor on the inside. The bartender jokingly said it gives hallucinogenic effects, sadly none were experienced - aside from the effects of the mezcal! Eating a scorpion is a much more daunting challenge than eating a meal worm. Almost anyone could down a meal worm when challenged, but a poisonous scorpion that's nearly a whole mouthful is significantly more intimidating. If you do successfully eat the scorpion, you receive a nifty black #1 shaped keychain that says "I ate the Scorpion. Worms are for wimps!" Like you needed it shaped like the number one, you knew who you were when you started.

The Scorpion Mezcal itself is tasty -- smoky, oaky, and vanilla-y with a bit of a bite.
